Governing Board

Summit Preparatory Charter School is governed by a Board of Directors with extensive educational experience, as well as expertise in business, finance, law, and media.  Our board members are all volunteers who have committed their time and energy to ensure the well-being of the school through oversight of the organization, fundraising, and personal financial support.  Each Board Member is personally invested in the success of Summit Prep, and believes deeply that every child deserves the opportunity to go to college.  Summit Prep board members serve on one or more of the following committees: Development; Finance; Academic Achievement; and Governance.  Other committees are formed as needed.

David Chan brings more than fifteen years of consulting experience to the Summit Prep Board.  Mr. Chan currently serves as the Practice Lead for the Compliance & Data Niche Center of Excellence at IMS Health where he has orchestrated the efforts of numerous multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams while advising on financial, operational, and government exposures.  Prior to being acquired by IMS Health, Mr. Chan was a founding Principal of Marina Consulting.  Mr. Chan began his career in Arthur Andersen’s Strategy Finance and Economics division which was later acquired by KPMG’s Forensics division where he served as a Director.  Mr. Chan is a regular on the speaker circuit, lecturing at least twice a year at industry conferences.  Mr. Chan graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance.

Alex Farivar brings experience across technology, finance, and assessment to the board. Alex currently works as a Technical Product Manager at Engrade/McGraw-Hill Education with a focus on the digital formative assessment engine used across McGraw-Hill products, including Engrade. Engrade is a cloud-based education platform used by K-12 districts and millions of users across the country. Alex also serves on the Financial Oversight Committee and is the Chair of the Child Development Services District Advisory Committee for Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD). Prior to his current employment, Alex worked at various education & technology organizations, including Apple,, and Teach For America. Alex earned his M.B.A. and M.P.P. from the University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in Business and Education from the University of California, Berkeley.

Gretchen Humbert brings over 20 years of experience in strategic planning and financial operations to Summit Prep’s Board. She currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Prior to joining the Museum, Ms. Humbert spent 2 years as CFO at and 10 years as CFO of Genex, a full-service Internet agency. She led the strategic planning group for Polygram Filmed Entertainment and served as CFO of one of its film production companies. Ms. Humbert began her career as an investment banker at Kidder, Peabody & Co. in New York and completed a bank training program at Citicorp. She is a graduate of the University of California Berkeley, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, and the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA, where she earned an MBA with a concentration in Finance/ Entertainment Management. Ms. Humbert lives in Santa Monica with her husband and two teenage sons. She serves as the Treasurer of the Summit Prep Board.

Edward T. Lin provides legal and fund development expertise to the Board. Following a 15 year career as a healthcare litigator and business attorney, Mr. Lin has for the last decade engaged in non-profit management and development, with a focus on serving children in need. Previously with A Place Called Home, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer, Harmony Project, and the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation, he is now Vice President at Netzel Grigsby Associates, Inc., a management and consulting firm assisting non-profit institutions and organizations. Mr. Lin has worked on capital and major funding campaigns for clients throughout the Western U.S., including numerous schools, public and private, in Los Angeles. Mr. Lin earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UCLA and Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School.  He is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE International) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Los Angeles Chapter. He serves as the Chair of the Summit Prep Board.

Jasmine Pachnanda brings experience in education and consulting to the Summit Prep Board of Directors. Ms. Pachnanda currently serves as Chief College Officer of Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, focused on raising the college graduation rates of Alliance graduates through programs to improve college match, increase alumni mentoring, and further develop the counseling program at each school.  Prior to this, Ms. Pachnanda served as a Senior Director for the Broad Center where she is responsible for activating the impact of the Broad Center network. She worked as an economic consultant with Arthur Andersen and Fulcrum Financial before returning to consulting with the Boston Consulting Group, where she worked on projects related to educational systems as well as healthcare and media. A graduate of UCLA, Ms. Pachnanda earned her MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.  She serves as the Vice-Chair of the Summit Prep Board.
